Lagos State Government Reviews Land Use Charge

Following revolutions by Stakeholders on the 2018 Lagos State Land Use Charge (LUC) Law, the Lagos State Executive Council at its meeting today, 15 March 2018, chaired by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved certain additional reliefs to alleviate the effects of the controversial LUC.

The approved reliefs include the following:

  •  50% discount on the Charge for commercial properties
  • 25% discount for residential properties jointly occupied by owners and third parties
  • 25% discount for properties used for industrial and manufacturing purposes
  • 15% discount for owner-occupied properties
  • Promised tax credit for those who had made their 2018 LUC payments prior these additional reliefs
  • Waiver of penalty for late payment of the LUC. LUC payers who have received their bills for 2018 will no longer be penalised for late payment
  • Payment of the LUC in installments has now been introduced

Other rates and reliefs provided for in the LUC Law (2018), apart from the ones enumerated above remain unchanged. See our newsletter of 1 March 2018 for details of these rates and reliefs.

The Council also resolved at the meeting today, that it shall forward to the Lagos State House of Assembly for review and passage, the following regulations:

a) The Regulation for review of applicable rates and regime of reliefs on Categories of Properties pursuant to LUC Law.

b) The Regulation for a framework for self-assessment.
